Reyneke Reserve Red 2019

By , 1 November 2022

The 2019 of the Reserve Red, the top-end Syrah from biodynamic grower Reyneke in Stellenbosch, comes much, much hyped but while I found it smart, I’m not sure it’s at the very pinnacle of what is being done with this variety in South Africa at the moment.

Dark berries, fynbos, cured meat and black pepper on the nose while the fruit on the palate is dense and succulent, the tannins crunchy. It ticks all the boxes but I thought it lacked X-factor and given that it costs R650 a bottle, I think there are other examples that offer better quality relative to price out there.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
