This wine combines fruit from three Semillon vineyards planted in 1902, 1936 and 1942 respectively plus a small portion of Muscat d’Alexandrie from a 1902 vineyard. As for winemaking, this involved spontaneous fermentation and maturation lasting 14 months, 70% in new French oak barrels and 30% in concrete egg.

The nose shows pronounced smoky, flinty notes before hay, blackcurrant and white peach while the palate has massive fruit concentration matched by bright acidity, a pithy quality to the finish. It’s an intense and forceful wine which needs plenty of time in bottle before it gives true pleasure. Price: R370 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
